Brooke chewed idly on the end of her pen as she stared down at the notes she had been writing. On her desk was the Pokémon egg that Prof. Elm sent to her, the team had decided to go for a joint effort in raising it; not only would the lab get its own little baby to take care of, but it was an excellent opportunity for them to study in detail the processes of how a Pokémon developed and grew. Brooke had absolutely no idea of what it would be, that was the thing about Pokémon eggs; why did each and every one look identical? Despite what the parents were? The egg sat in a special case, which kept the temperature ideal as it sat on a little bed of straw for comfort when it eventually hatched.
Brooke glanced up at the egg, still nothing, they’d had it for a few weeks now... Maybe they would need to gift it to a trainer, see if travelling would help. Brooke reminisced of the days when she received her first and only Pokémon egg from her mother; the egg that hatched into one of her best companions, the little Mareep that was now a powerful Ampharos.
Speaking of which, the yellow striped Pokémon tottled over to her owner and meeped happily at her. Brooke smiled and petted the Pokémon between the ears, it was good that they were able to have a companion Pokémon in the lab, Ampharos was an excellent helper. “Hey Amphy, how’s about taking the egg for a walk? See if it helps.” She suggested, the yellow Pokémon bounced earlier and nodded, Brooke handed the case carefully to the electric type who cradled it with care as it headed for the door, “Take good care of it Amphy!” The sheep Pokémon bleated happily in response.
Brooke smiled as she watched the Pokémon leave the lab and go into the gardens outside; she turned back to her work and started tapping away at her keyboard. She needed to get this report done.

Pokemon laboratories weren’t famous for being discrete, and this one was no exception. After walking around town lost for a good hour Jack felt ridiculous for not noticing it sooner. It stood at the top of the hill, looking down at Maple Town and the ocean beyond. It was nice. The sea air reminded Jack of Olivine.
He’d never met a Professor before, but Jack had seen them on TV and listened to Oak on the radio. This was big. The newspaper had asked him over 19 other people to write this story on Professor Verity. If he could nail it then they might give him a full time job as a field reporter.
Enough dilly-dallying. Jack walked forward towards the big double doors and pushed them open firmly, with Pom, his Aipom, running along behind him. They flung open, but Jack didn’t count on the door stopping right in his face. There was a chunk as the door connected with something on the other side, and then a thud as Jack’s walked into it face first.
From the daze, all Jack could see was an Ampharos on the floor, something flying through the air and Pom, laughing at him.

Brooke was entirely unaware of the looming disaster as Jack and Amphy collided on either sides of the door, she was still just writing her report. It was entirely that when the egg case crashed to the floor it didn’t break, instead only a large crack ran through the thick plastic. Ampharos out of shock released a sudden burst of electricity surged towards anything that stepped too close before rolling over and squealing in dismay as she saw the cracked egg case. It didn’t wait to see how Jack had faired, instead it scampered up and snatched the egg case and rushed over to Brooke; holding it up in her face, “Amphy, Amphy!” It bleated, trying to get her attention.
The researcher resounded a soft, “Hmmm?” When her yellow companion returned so swiftly, she turned to see the Pokémon and her expression turned from boredness of her work to sudden panic, “No!” Brooke took the case from the electric type, punched in the code to unlock the case and took the egg out and cradled it in her arms as she inspected it for any damage. She heaved a massive sigh of relief when the egg had turned out to be unscathed, “Thank goodness... Amphy, how did it happen?” She queried, the yellow Pokémon jumped around and pointed its little arms towards the door.
Brooke stood and tucking the egg into the crook of an arm whilst the other grasped onto the broken plastic case, she marched over to the door and flung it open, perhaps hitting Jack in the face a second time, she saw the bewildered looking boy standing there with an Aipom with him, “Are you the cause of this?” She demanded, thrusting the case into his hands, “Are you the one that made Amphy fall and drop this very expensive egg casing?” The electric Pokémon had followed and stood behind her trainer, arms folded over her chest as she looked equally unimpressed as Brooke.

He was fairly sure his nose was bleeding, but the shock stopped Jack from checking. Not only had he just been smacked in the face, but he’d just managed to piss off one of the most famous people on the island, and easily the most famous he’d ever met.
“I, um, yeah, sorry,” Jack feebly managed to stutter some noises that vaguely resembled words. Although he was a good few inches taller than her, Professor Verity gave a look that made him feel microscopic. Goodbye newspaper contract.
Aipom had stopped laughing and run up Jack’s back, perching on his shoulder to hide from the intimidating duo. “I’m Jack, from the, uh, newspaper?” he grinned weakly, offering a handshake.

"Ugh... if we can't find a single piece of civilization soon I'm just gonna..."
Seth Galloway had been grumbling to himself for a good while now. He had only recently come into the Kansai region on the back of his Unfezant- it had been easier to Fly around a storm then Surf through it- and landing in a strange region without any sense of direction did become a little agitating when Seth finally came to terms with his being lost.
Just up ahead, however, the sight of a Pokemon Laboratory came into view. With an internal whoop of joy he ran towards it, hoping to finally attain a map or get an idea of just where he was.
"Hey! Anyone ther- ohh..." Seth stopped short at the doorway, coming upon the Scientist and Journalist in what seemed to be- for lack of better terms- a bad situation.
"I, uh, I don't know where I am and I can, just, y'know, come back another time..." he stumbled over his words like a high schooler asking a girl out, the death stare of the Professor causing the once whooping feeling to say "eep."

“I’m Jack, from the, uh, newspaper?”
Brooke flinched when she realised that poor Jack had actually come to harm from this, she pulled out a handkerchief and stepped forward to deny his handshake and go straight to tending that bloody nose of his, ”Oh, so you must be Mr. Springs… I expected you to be,” She paused, wiping up most of the blood and instructing him over to a chair to sit down and hold his head tilted back, “…older.”. Ampharos didn’t nearly look as guilty as Brooke did, the researcher smiled; leaving the handkerchief with Jack as she stood back and placed her hands on her hips, ”I’m Brooke Verity. Though, you must have guessed that by now.” She admitted with a nervous chuckle.
Brooke settled the egg carefully on the desk, grabbing her jacket from the back of her chair and wrapping it around the egg to create a makeshift nest for now until she could replace the cracked carrier.
"I, uh, I don't know where I am and I can, just, y'know, come back another time…”
Brooke turned to see the startled looking young man at the door, looking about the same age as Jack, ”Gosh Amphy, looks like we’ve hooked in a bunch of young’ns!” She joked as she waved Seth to come inside, “Don’t just stand there, come in or leave.” That probably came out a bit sharper than perhaps Brooke had intended, but she was implying she wanted him to come in. The boy clearly looked lost and in need of a bit of guidance!

The Professor waved him in and added -somewhat sharply- to “Don’t just stand there, come in or leave.”
"Y-Yes ma'am!" he said before walking in swiftly and shutting the door behind him. He noticed the Journalist holding his bleeding nose and hastily added, "I can wait until you're done, you seem to be on business right now, don't let me slow you down!"

Lorna grinned when the clouds began to thin and the sight of the Maple Town laboratory came into view. She patted Dragonite's head and pointed down at the building. The large ogrange dragon nodded once before angling his wings and plummeting down in a stomch-churning dive. A moment before he would've hit the ground he righted himself and the tips of his scaley wings just brushed the top of the grass. The beast had hardly come to a stop before Lorna had slid down from his back.
"Nice - though you could take it a little easier on the acrobatics y'know," Lorna chuckled. The dragon-type gave her a saucy grin as they both headed towards the hulking shape of the lab. "Come on I've got to deliver these field reports then we can be off again - if you behave yourself I might let you take a detour over the mountains to visit that colony of Salamances."
Dragonite roared his approval as he lumbered behind his trainer who suddenly drew to a halt upon seeing the crowd around the door of the lab. "Now what's all this then Verity? I don't recall the lab being a particularly popular hang out for youngsters."

"I can wait until you're done, you seem to be on business right now, don't let me slow you down!"
"Honestly, I don't think we'll be getting much done just yet." Jack smiled, awkwardly looking at the guy while tilting his head back and holding the bridge of his nose.
Pom was closely following the Ampharos around the lab. It reminded him of home, with the great lighthouse that was powered by one. He often imagined with his friend Sammy that they'd climb to the top of it one day, to see the view. He'd have to go home and do that some day.
Jack turned his head slightly, with some difficulty, towards the Professor. "Sorry again, by the way, with the egg. It's not damaged is it?"

Brooke chuckled, ”What he said. I think we’ll postpone the beginning of your research until tomorrow Jack. I think it’ll be best you get to know the town first, if anything exciting happens then well… by all means, til then however.” She smiled, moving back to see Seth walk in so timidly, ”How can I help you?” She asked, then saw Lorna arrive with her Dragonite.
”Ah! Lorna! Long time no see!” She grinned, heading over to give her fellow professor a hug, "Now what's all this then Verity? I don't recall the lab being a particularly popular hang out for youngsters."
Brooke laughed, ”I know! I can’t imagine what it must be like for Oak in Pallet Town. Gosh those were the days, I still remember when I first stepped in his lab to get my Charmander!” Her attention diverted briefly to Lorna’s Dragonite, ”Hello old friend, if you want to see Charizard he’s trying to teach Gabite and Axew to become better dragons, I’m sure he’ll need your help!”
"Sorry again, by the way, with the egg. It's not damaged is it?"
“Oh!” Brooke almost forgot about Jack then, “no, the egg is fine thankfully. I’ll get one of my colleagues to replace the case later, I’m sure we have one in storage we can use for the time being.”
She quickly turned back to Lorna, gosh it was so strange talking to several people at once! Normally it was so quiet here in Maple, ”I hope you have those reports, I’ve been eager to read them.” Brooke beamed.

He was sure that his nose wasn't going to bleed any more, so Jack sat forward to see who the professor was talking to. He sat in shock at the woman in front of him. Lorna McKinley! The Johto champion. Jack remembered her face from the poster that his brother Max had had, and the videos that Max used to watch.
He remembered Christmas five or six years ago, he had gotten his brother a recording of all of the Johto League finals from the past decade. Max loved that tape and would watch it for hours to help his technique.
"Lorna McKinley? The famous Johto Champion?"
How weird was this day gonna get?

Lorna's Dragonite beamed at Brooke before shuffling out of the lab with a gleeful roar. It wasn't long before there was an answering one and another large, organge dragon came lumbering out from behind the lab. Whilst the dragons reconnected Lorna smiled and pulled out a heavy manilla envelope from her satchel and passed them to Brooke. "Here we are, I found some rather interesting data in the nesting habits of Dragon-types last time I was near the mountains, there's some photos in there to go with my notes."
"Lorna McKinley? The famous Johto champion?"
Lorna turned to face one of the young men - probably around 19 years old or so. "Well I dunno about famous, that was way back in '99 after all." she laughed and winked as she extended a hand towards him. "But yeah I'm her, just replace Champion with field biologist. Nice to meet you - ah what's your name?"

"But yeah I'm her, just replace Champion with field biologist. Nice to meet you - ah what's your name?"
He was stunned! "Jack! Jack Springs. It's an honour to meet you!" He stood, offering a handshake. "I'm a reporter for the Silverfern Sentinel, writing an article on the Professor here." He motioned towards Brooke, who was beavering away doing, um, science stuff.
"Hey, um, this might be a bit blunt, but could you please sign a Pokeball or something?" He grinned widely.

"Uh sure." Lorna shurgged with a crooked grin as she gave his hand a firm shake. "If you can find a pen or something we'll be all set!"
She grinned at the second young man in the lab who looked to be about the same age as Jack. He seemed shy and almost uncomfortable. "Hello there."
She turned back to Brooke with her ever present grin and dragged her fingers through her short blonde locks. "Now you've got my reports and I can see you've got a crowd here but after you're done I'd like to see that pokemon egg I've been hearing about..."
She peered past Brooke and saw the wrapped up bundle sitting on the desk and grinned. "Oh lovely!" she said as she made her way over to the desk and hunched over the egg observing it closely. She waved absentmindedly to Brooke. "Keep doing what you're doing dear, don't mind me. Oh and Jack find that pen after you're done if you want the signature."
With that the Johto veteran returned to leaning over the egg observing it closely and humming to herself. She knew Brooke would be used to her eccentricities, though she'd quite forgotten about the two young men standing beside the pokemon professor. "I hope its a fire-type." she mumbled to herself as she rummaged around in her satchel for her camera and took a few quick snapshots for reference in the field.

Seth went quiet after the third person arrived, and shared the reporter's surprise.
"So wait... you're both from Johto?" Seth finally piped up after all the conversation. "I just came from there, I was born in Goldenrod. Excuse my intrusion, but my name's Seth. I'm trying to gain more experience before battling Claire and joining Ranger School. I... got a little lost on the way in, a storm threw Unfezant and I off guard."
Saying what he was doing there made him feel a little more confident. "If it's not too much to ask, what exactly are you studying?"
